By FARm 1. FIAuRANI, GEORGE WANG AND L. M. T0cANrINs I HE COMMON types of megaloblastic anemias usually res1)ond well to vitamin B-12 or folic acid but there are some which respond incompletely or not at all to these antianemic agents. In 1936, Israel and \Vilkinson referred to these megaloblastic anemias which are refractory to liver extract as “Achrestic n1 ‘ Since then a number of cases have been described but only in a few instances have the underlying biochemical defects been elucidated. One example of this type of anemia is Di Guglielmo syndrome, a megaloblastic anemia the metabolic tietect of which has not been defined. \Villsa described a few cases of megaloblastic anemias that did not respond to pure liver extract or vitamin B-12, but responded to crude liver extract. Up to the present time it i0 not clearly

متن کاملSulphasalazine associated pancytopenia may be caused by acute folate deficiency.
Agranulocytosis and aplastic anaemia associated with sulphasalazine are well recognised, but pancytopenia caused by acute megaloblastic arrest of haemopoiesis while taking sulphasalazine has not previously been described. We report three patients who, after taking sulphasalazine for over two years, suddenly developed severe pancytopenia with gross megaloblastic changes in the marrow. In two pat...
متن کاملMegaloblastic bone marrow changes after repeated nitrous oxide anaesthesia. Reversal with folinic acid.
A seriously ill patient was found to have megaloblastic changes in his bone marrow after a nitrous oxide anaesthesia which lasted for 105 min. After an interval of 7 h a second nitrous oxide anaesthetic was administered, during which the patient received 30 mg of folinic acid. His marrow was normal when assessed 4 h later.
متن کاملFormiminotransferase deficiency syndrome associated with megaloblastic anemia responsive to pyridoxine or folic acid.
Formiminotransferase deficiency syndrome1,2 was firstly discovered by us as a new inborn error of folate metabolism which was characterized by 1) mental retardation, 2) hyperfolic acidemia, and 3) an excessive urinary excretion of formiminoglutamic acid (FIGLU) following an oral dose of L-histidine. A definite diagnosis of this syndrome was established by demonstrating a defective activity of f...
متن کاملInterrelations of vitamin B12 and folic acid metabolism: folic acid clearance studies.
The studies of many investigators have led to a unified concept of the megaloblastic anemias as a single morphologic entity due to defective nucleoprotein synthesis from various causes. The vast majority of patients with megaloblastic anemia have been found to have deficiency of vitamin B12, of folic acid, or of both vitamins. For this reason, the possible interrelations of these two vitamins h...
